RN Educator Responsibilities

The home RN has many responsibilities to the patient some of which include but are not limited to:

• Creating a comfortable learning atmosphere
• Facilitating conversation and asking questions
• Providing rationale for instructions
• Asking for and providing ongoing feedback
• Praising all accomplishments
• Patient confidence building
• Ensuring that the nurse and the patient function as a flexible team
• Providing positive reinforcement
• Allowing patients the freedom to start, stop and repeat as necessary
• Set Daily goals and sharing expectations
• Evaluate the day's events
• Assess patient's ability to troubleshoot equipment and access problems
• Assess patient's readiness to act in case of emergencies
• Assess the patient for competency to transition home
• Assess patient at home during the first few treatments

One should remember that learning is gradual, takes place over time and occurs in small increments
