By law, all ESRD patients must be offered all modes of dialysis including HHD. The Medicare act does allow for reimbursement for home hemodialysis treatments. This means that Medicare pays for DHHD as does Medi-Cal. However, since the reimbursement act has not been modified and adjusted to include payment for Daily Home Hemodialysis (5 to 6 times per week), intermediaries use their own discretionary power to decide on payment term.
Patients in general have no financial obligation. However a patient may have out of pocket expenses in some cases where electrical and plumbing modifications are needed at home.
The choice of equipment in part could be dictated by the type of insurance the individual carries.
We encourage our patients to dialysis more frequently and maintain a minimum of 5 treatments a week.
